Environment

Although nanoscale particles also occur naturally, it is not yet possible to definitively assess the ecological impacts of engineered nanomaterials on the environment. Engineeered nanoparticles can be released in the water, the air or the soil, either deliberately – for instance via fertilisers or pesticides – or unintentionally, in the course of the production, use or disposal of nanomaterials or nanomaterials-containing objects. Very little is known of the fate of nanomaterials in the environment. This module intends to bring greater clarity in this area. In terms of opportunities, nanomaterials can lead to new assessment tools or remediation technologies for the environment.
